The Kiwanis Club of Livonia Early Risers focuses on helping local children. This year, they did this in a new way by collecting donations for the Methodist Children's Home Society's Detroit Resource Center. The Kiwanis of Michigan District Governor tasked local Kiwanis clubs to start a new club project that helps children aged 0-5 years old in the community, to fit into a program called "Children Are Our Future." Livonia Kiwanis members thought this would be a great opportunity to conduct a donation drive, and after speaking with a representative from the Detroit Resource Center, Kiwanians found out that baby formula is an item that does not get donated as often. Many people do diaper drives, but items like wipes and formula are sometimes left behind. The Resource Center accepts donations of diapers, baby wipes, formula, baby food, shampoo, new baby clothing, and new baby toys. Every donation goes directly to a family experiencing infant-essentials insecurity.
Livonia Kiwanis partnered with Livonia Citizens Caring About Black Lives to host a baby item donation drive, with the Livonia Chamber of Commerce graciously becoming the drop-off location. After reaching out to many community groups and local businesses, there was an overwhelming desire to provide help from the Livonia Community! Livonia Kiwanis was blown away with support from local organizations and businesses that donated towards the cause. Some businesses donated a gift card to purchase supplies, generously wrote a check that was used to purchase bulk supplies, and others put out donation boxes and collected their own items to drop off.
Overall, the group collected more than 7527 diapers, 5306 baby wipes, and over 3928 ounces of baby formula! They also had some additional donations of baby food (more than 25 pounds), a stroller, and other various baby items that will be put to use.
They could not have done it without the generous donations from the following businesses and organizations: Beauty Bar & Boutique, Bill Brown Ford, Cupler Crafters, FRC Team 2832: The Livonia Warriors Team and Tyros Robotics Team, Kroger, Larry's Foodland, Livonia Citizens Caring About Black Lives, Meijer, Northville Civic Concern, NorthWest Wayne County Zonta Club, Ryan Group Transportation.
All donations will benefit Methodist Children's Home Society's Detroit Resource, which provides essential infant supplies to families in need. You can learn more about the Resource Center at https://mchsmi.org/detroit-resource-center/
